At J&B Recycling, we are always proud to support local schools and educational initiatives. As Catcote Academy’s Careers and Enterprise Champion, we understand the importance of providing young people with opportunities to learn about sustainability and environmental responsibility.
After attending one of Catcote Academy’s events, we got talking to Tim from NTH Solutions, and when we heard about their litter-picking efforts at North Tees Hospital, we were more than happy to help. We provided students with litter-picking kits and Hi-Vis vests, ensuring they had everything they needed to take on the task and make a difference in their community.
Why This Matters
This project wasn’t just about tidying up hospital grounds, it was is also important to educate the next generation on the impact of waste and the importance of recycling. We recognise that today’s young people are the future leaders of sustainability efforts, and by giving them hands-on experience, we hope to inspire lifelong environmental awareness.
At J&B Recycling, we regularly support educational projects, whether through school tours, recycling talks, or providing litter-picking kits. We are always happy to work with schools to encourage positive habits that benefit both the community and the planet.
Tim, Facilities Team Leader at NTH Solutions, shared his appreciation for our support:
"I would just like to send our thanks and gratitude for supplying us with the pickers for our litter pick on the 6th of March, which proved a great success. We were able to remove vast amounts of recyclable rubbish from our grounds and help the children learn a very valuable lesson about caring for our area and the environment. Once again, many thanks from North Tees and Hartlepool Hospital and Catcote Academy."
Why Litter Picking Matters
Litter doesn't just look bad, it has serious environmental consequences. When waste is left in nature, it can harm wildlife, pollute waterways, and contribute to the global plastic crisis.
Threat to Wildlife – Animals often mistake litter for food or become trapped in discarded items. Plastic waste, in particular, can be deadly to birds, marine life, and other animals, causing injury or starvation.
Oceans and Waterways – When litter isn’t collected, rain and wind carry it into drains, rivers, and eventually the ocean. Once there, it becomes part of a much larger problem - marine pollution. Every year, millions of tons of plastic enter our oceans, endangering marine life and ecosystems.
Microplastics – Over time, plastics don’t disappear; they break down into tiny particles called microplastics. These particles infiltrate our water, soil, and even food supply, affecting both wildlife and human health. Scientists have found microplastics in fish, shellfish, and even drinking water, highlighting how far-reaching the issue has become.
Here at J&B Recycling, we see first hand the positive impact recycling can have on the environment. Recycling reduces the need for new raw materials, cuts down on pollution, and keeps waste from harming the environment. By educating the next generation on responsible waste disposal, we can ensure a greener future.
Looking Ahead
We’d like to say a huge thank you to Tim, NTH Solutions, the students, and their job coaches for their enthusiasm and dedication. Their hard work is a great example of how small actions can have a big impact.
