J&B Recycling Helping Customers Improve Segregation and Reduce Contamination

10.10.25

At J&B Recycling, we know that the success of recycling starts long before materials reach our facilities. The biggest impact often comes from what happens at the front end – the point where waste is first discarded. That’s why we’re working closely with our customers to help improve segregation, reduce contamination, and ultimately get more materials recycled.

Every business is different. The type of waste generated, the layout of a site, and the awareness of staff all influence how effective recycling can be. Our team has been carrying out detailed waste audits for customers across the North East to help identify opportunities for improvement. From there, we provide practical recommendations – whether that’s introducing the right type and size of containers, relocating bins to make recycling easier, or improving signage and communication with staff.

Our marketing team has played a big part in helping customers take these improvements further. We’ve developed a range of bespoke signage tailored to each business’s specific needs. These signs are professionally designed, printed on durable materials, and branded to match our customers’ visual identity. Some customers want to focus on promoting recycling of key materials – for example, office-based businesses often want to improve paper and cardboard recycling, while schools and colleges might target drinks cans and plastic bottles. Others, such as manufacturing sites or healthcare settings, are keen to reduce contamination from PPE, vapes, or food waste.

By customising signage to reflect what’s most relevant to each customer, we’ve found that recycling engagement increases significantly. Staff can clearly see what goes where, which reduces confusion and contamination – two of the biggest challenges in recycling.

A recent example of this is our work with Greencroft Bottling, one of the UK’s largest contract wine bottlers and a long-standing J&B Recycling customer. We recently supported them in enhancing their on-site recycling facilities by introducing new bins and bespoke signage across their premises. The result looks fantastic and makes it even easier for staff and visitors to recycle correctly. This project was all about building on the great work Greencroft Bottling was already doing and helping them take their recycling to the next level.

Beyond the physical improvements, we also help customers strengthen awareness and understanding through staff engagement. Our team regularly delivers on-site training sessions to explain how waste should be segregated and why contamination has such an impact. For some customers, we’ve attended open days and staff events to talk directly to employees, answer questions, and even run interactive recycling challenges to get people thinking about what happens to their waste once it leaves the site.

We take a holistic approach – not just collecting waste but helping customers embed good recycling habits into their operations. The benefits go far beyond compliance. Better segregation means cleaner, higher-quality materials entering the recycling process, which in turn improves recycling rates, reduces disposal costs, and minimises the amount of waste that ends up being treated as general waste.

It also helps our customers demonstrate their commitment to sustainability – something that’s becoming increasingly important to employees, customers, and stakeholders alike. By working together to improve segregation and reduce contamination, we can all play a part in building a more environmentally responsible future.

As legislation evolves under DEFRA’s upcoming “Simpler Recycling” changes, getting segregation right at source will become even more important. At J&B Recycling, we’re already supporting our customers to prepare for these changes, ensuring that they not only meet future requirements but also achieve tangible benefits today.

From site audits and signage to training and community engagement, J&B Recycling’s goal is simple: to make recycling work better for everyone. Whether it’s a factory, office, school, or college, we provide the practical tools and ongoing support to help customers recycle more and waste less – proving that small changes at the front end can make a big difference at the finish line.
