J&B Recycling Knowledge

Recycling in the National Curriculum

Recycling in the National Curriculum

The intersection of education and sustainability is pivotal in moulding young minds to inherit a world confronting the overwhelming challenges of climate change. The policy paper “Sustainability and Climate Change: A Strategy for the Education and Children’s Services Systems” underscores this need. It emphasises the role of education in not only imparting knowledge but fostering the skills and attitudes conducive to a sustainable future. J&B Recycling aligns with this vision, endeavouring to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and practical experience in the realm of recycling.

Science Meets Sustainability

The study of recycling in the classroom isn't just an exploration of waste management - it's a multifaceted journey into the realms of science. Pupils are introduced to the various materials making up our everyday products, the forces acting upon them, and the transitions they undergo. However, how these learned principles apply in the real world can remain an enigma unless illustrated with tangible examples.

J&B Recycling: Bringing Theory to Life

Enter J&B Recycling. We understand that for the national curriculum to make a lasting impact, students need to witness these principles in action. We provide insights into the actual operations at our Materials Recycling Facility (MRF), serving as a living textbook of recycling and material science.

Our MRF isn’t just a recycling facility; it’s a large-scale demonstration of science in action. Here, pupils can observe the applications of relative mass, balanced and unbalanced forces, gravity's effects, light refraction, and magnetism. Each piece of waste sorted and recycled is a testament to the principles they learn in classrooms.

Through an interactive experience with J&B Recycling, students don’t just learn; they witness the lifecycle of materials, the science behind their transformation, and the global impact of recycling. It’s an experience that not only complements the national curriculum but elevates it.

Students from Kilton Thorpe Special School in Saltburn visited our MRF in 2011 and the organising teacher Chris Race stated in a letter to us "Many thanks for arranging our visit to the Recycling Centre. All the students really enjoyed this climax to our recycling project and benefited from the experience".

In Conclusion

In an age where sustainable development and environmental consciousness are paramount, J&B Recycling stands as a bridge between academic learning and practical application. By intertwining with the national curriculum, we aim to foster a generation that's not just aware of recycling’s importance but is also equipped with the scientific knowledge to innovate and enhance current systems.
