Daniel Sugden joined J&B Recycling as Transport Manager in July 2022 and is going from strength to strength in this role, which is vital to the operational success of our award-winning business.

Daniel started his career in the British Army as an Infantryman in the Prince of Wales Own Regiment of Yorkshire, where he developed a keen interest in transport and logistics. He credits the Army for providing him with excellent managerial training and experience. After achieving the rank of Corporal in just 2-years, Daniel decided to move on from the Army to spend more time with his family.

Daniel’s first job as civilian was with DPD as a driver and shift manager. As well as logistics, he developed an interest in legislation and compliance, which led to his next role as Warehouse Manager at Total Produce, a food service logistics company based in Gateshead.

During his time with Total Produce, Daniel briefly covered the Transport Manager role, and it just clicked! He says, “I found my niche. I enjoy working in logistics and I had developed an interest in transport during my time in the Army. I hadn’t necessarily thought about the role previously, but I really enjoyed it – and I discovered I had a natural flair for it!”

When Daniel saw the Transport Manager role advertised with J&B Recycling on Indeed, he didn’t know very much about the recycling industry, but he felt it was full of opportunity and would prove very interesting. He wasn’t wrong!

Daniel says, “Every day is a challenge – in a good way! My experience in transport, logistics and management is transferrable across different industries, so I have been able to make a positive impact on the operations at J&B. That said, I love to learn, and the last few months have provided a really positive learning curve in terms of my recycling knowledge.

“I’ve always been a keen recycler, but my role with J&B has given me the opportunity to delve much deeper – it’s been a real eye opener! Most days I have to research where specific materials go and how they are processed when they leave our facility. I learn something new about the process almost every day.”

Daniel says he is surrounded by an experienced, supportive team who are great at what they do. Ashleigh Sweeney, Operations Manager, who works alongside Daniel, says, “Daniel has made a really positive impact on the team in a relatively short space of time. He hit the ground running and his experience of transport and logistics has helped enhance our service offering”.

In his spare time, Daniel likes to keep himself fit by going to the gym and he loves anything to do with fast cars, particularly rally cars. He has a 10-month-old son, Jacob, and is a hands on dad. Jacob has just started rolling over, so there is lots of exciting stuff to come on that front.

Asked what he likes most about working at J&B Recycling, Daniel says it is the ‘feel-good factor’ of knowing that you are doing something that is having a positive impact on the environment.
