J&B Recycling has recorded its highest amount of material processed ever this month.

January 2020 has seen a 43% growth of material processed at J&B’s Windermere Road site in Hartlepool from the same month last year.

Mark Penny, Commercial Manager at J&B Recycling, said: “January is always our busiest time for recycling here at J&B as you would expect following Christmas and New Year. “

The recent success for J&B comes at a time when the recycling market is suffering an overall 50% decrease in the value of the finished product of recycled materials per tonne.

J&B’s increased investment has ensured the business can process the materials to the highest specification required for the strict restrictions imposed in the export markets.

This investment has not only improved the quality of fibre grades it has also increased capacity and growth in processed materials. This achieved in a time when other MRF operators may be slowing down their plants to produce a higher quality.

J&B remains sustainable and confident with its position within the industry providing confidence to our customers despite the current challenges of the market.

A £7.5m investment from the Business Growth Fund (BGF) in 2014 enabled J&B to undertake this expansion and focus on process optimisation over four years.\

Mark added: “The continued investment into our recycling centres means we will continue to increase the amount of recyclable materials we can process.

“We are also continuing to upgrade plant equipment to add flexibility to our operations with the most advanced technology that is on offer to the waste industry.”

From April 2018 to March 2019, J&B processed a total of 140,000 tonnes of kerbside-collected commingled materials, commercial dry mixed recycling, general waste from local authority, commercial and industrial sources and construction, demolition waste streams.

The company currently operates from four sites across a total of 20 acres of developed facilities in the North East and employs more than 200 people in an ever-expanding team.
