J&B Recycling has successfully re-tendered for a contract to process Sunderland City Council’s household recycling.
Starting in April 2022 when the original contract ends, the contract has a value of up to £8million over a 5-year period and hopes to continue reducing contamination in Sunderland’s kerbside collections, providing an efficient service with maximum recycling output.
The co-mingled recyclables and separated paper contract, has been with J&B Recycling since April 2015.
To improve our service and show our commitment to Sunderland City Council, J&B Recycling opened a new recycling centre in Pattinson Industrial Estate (Washington) in 2019 to receive deliveries of Sunderland City Council’s kerbside recyclables.
The co-mingled material is then processed at J&B’s Material Recycling Facility (MRF) in Hartlepool, where 135,000 tonnes of mixed waste is processed each year. The MRF is an industry leading high-tech facility, recognised nationally for its exceptionally efficient processing that produces the highest quality materials.
Mark Penny, Commercial Manager at J&B Recycling, says: “We’re looking forward to continuing our work with Sunderland City Council. Our close relationship over the past six years has enabled a continually reduced contamination level in recycling with Sunderland.
“The council continues to promote positive recycling behaviours to residents and takes appropriate action against those who don’t act”.
Councillor Claire Rowntree, Deputy Leader of Sunderland City Council, said: “The council is committed to Sunderland being a clean green city and supporting residents to recycle effectively through a range of measures is a vital part of this. Recycling plays a key role in delivering on our City Plan outcomes. J&B Recycling has played a major part in helping us meet these over the last six years and we are looking forward to continuing to work with them as we build on what has been achieved so far.”
As a Hartlepool based firm with 100% of its workforce living in the North East, this contract adds to J&B Recycling’s portfolio of local authorities and continues to support the local business with the possibility of creating new jobs, apprenticeships and the overall expansion of the company.
Over the last six years J&B Recycling have undertaken an ongoing programme of major upgrades following a £7.5m investment from the Business Growth Fund (BGF) in 2014. These investments have taken the company from a basic low-tech operation to an industry leading, high tech, high profit operation which has resulted in a 200% uplift in tonnages processed per hour through the plant, benefiting contracts hugely.
In July 2021, Urbaser Ltd one of the largest leading International Waste Management Companies confirmed the acquisition of J&B Recycling. This allowed J&B Recycling to continue with the continuous improvement programme of investment in technology and staff, to further increase processing capability, with a major upgrade planned for 2022.
