Every year on April 22nd, Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement.
First held in 1970, Earth Day was created to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Since then, the day includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by EarthDay.org in which billions of people around the world take part in, in over 193 countries. On Earth Day in 2016, the landmark Paris Agreement was signed by the United States, the United Kingdom, China and 120 other countries. This signing satisfied a key requirement for the entry into force of the historic draft climate protection treaty, adopted by consensus of the 195 nations present at the 2015 United Nations Climate Conference in Paris.
Numerous communities engage in Earth Day actions, an entire week of activities focused on the environmental issues that our world faces. On Earth Day in 2020, over 100 million people around the world observed the 5oth anniversary in what is referred to as the largest online mass mobilisation in history!
This year in 2022, the Earth Day theme is ‘Invest in Our Planet’. This is the time to change the business climate, the political climate and how we act on climate. Now is the time for courage to preserve and protect our health, families, and livelihoods, because a green future is a prosperous future.
Businesses have a responsibility to act boldly and implement ways in which they can reduce their carbon footprints. Unless businesses act now, climate change will ever more deeply damage economies, increase scarcity, drain profits, and job prospects and impact us all. Many studies show a direct correlation between sustainable business practices, share pieces and business performance. Many companies are now understanding that it is no longer a choice between going green and growing long-term profits as sustainability is the path to prosperity. For both humanitarian and business reasons, it is imperative that companies act and embrace the benefits of a green economy.
