J&B Recycling is taking its green message back to the classroom after securing waste management contracts with a federation of schools and colleges.

J&B Recycling has been appointed to handle waste generated at Northallerton College and its partner schools the Allertonshire and Risedale Sports and Community College in Catterick Garrison.

The Teesside-based business already manages waste for a number of educational establishments across the North East including Middlesbrough College, Hartlepool College of Further Education and Cleveland College of Art and Design.

The contract in Northallerton will see J & B Recycling handle approximately 150 tonnes of waste a year to be sorted and processed at its Hartlepool facility.

Mark Penny, Commercial Manager of J&B Recycling, said: “We are delighted to win the waste management contracts with the schools and colleges in Northallerton and Catterick Garrison.

“One of the encouraging things about working within the education sector is that the young people are already very engaged with recycling and understand the importance of collecting and sorting waste. That makes our job easier but also helps to create a welcoming environment for anyone visiting.”

Once the contract is up and running, J&B Recycling will be looking to award the facilities its prestigious Zero Waste to Landfill accreditation, which certifies that all waste is recycled or recovered as energy.

Mark added: “Once we’d met the site team at Northallerton College and built up their confidence and trust, we came up with a proposal which we felt best matched their needs as they were keen to reduce the amount of waste which ends up in landfill.”

Gill Morrissey, Director of Integrated Services and Facilities for the three sites, said: “The Colleges and the Allertonshire School generate many tonnes of waste each month including paper, packaging, plastic cups, food waste as well as metals, glass and construction materials.

“Educational establishments play a vital role in reducing and dealing with waste. Recycling schemes in schools and colleges not only educate our young people in helping them improve their environment but can also reduce money spent by the schools on the cost associated with waste disposal.

“Working with a company which knows the waste management sector so well, was very important to us.”

J&B Recycling was named Hartlepool’s Business of the Year for the second time in 2013 and won the Low Carbon and Environment category for Teesside in the North East Business Awards in both 2013 and 2014.
